Fashion Art & Culture - Then is Now

FASHION, ART & CULTURE - THEN IS NOW EVALUATION

For this project I began by researching various fashion periods from the past. By doing this I was able to figure out which topic I was most attracted to. I looked at punk and Vivienne Westwood which I came close to choosing to work with to create my final piece but I chose to work with the 1920’s Flapper theme. I gathered many images that helped me to develop ideas from the internet and books. I found this fashion era really exciting especially the Flapper dress designs that would be worn for parties and other evening events. I like the detailing on the dresses such as the sequins and pearls that were used to decorate the garment.

The first step I made after I had decided to base my final piece on the fashion trends of the 1920’s, I drew a spider diagram and sketched a few ideas as to what I could do. I came up with the idea of making a miniature dress as I found myself attracted to the evening dresses women would wear in this particular time period. I also chose the theme for the exhibition I created which would be based on 1920’s Flapper dresses.
After I decided on my theme, I looked through books, magazines and browsed the internet for inspirational images. I also drew a few designs and tried out which colours I should choose when selecting the fabric and other materials. This then helped me to come up with a final idea and allowed me to begin looking at colours and fabrics I would use. I picked out two different fabrics to make the dress and selected sequins, beads and feathers that would all fit in with the colour scheme. I created a design for the written part of the advertisement on my laptop which I decided I would hang from below the miniature dress. I kept the writing simple because I wanted the main focus to be on the miniature dress. Now I have seen my final piece hung up, I think this works very well.

Overall I am very pleased with the outcome of my final piece. The only thing I would have liked to of changed is the size of the miniature dress. If I had the chance to make my final piece again I would make the dress slightly bigger as I do think now I have seen it hung up it looks a little bit lost. The written part of the exhibition advertisement looks good along with the garment and I am happy with the context too.
I am very happy with the fabrics and decoration I chose to use. I feel that the colour scheme along with the materials work well with the 1920’s Flapper theme.
I found making the miniature dress took a long time to complete as I hand sewed all of it and stitched the decoration one by one too. This process was quite tiring but I did also enjoy it and now I have completed it I am pleased.
